Register a drone: UAS operator registration with the Federal Aviation Authority

Since May 1, 2021, drone pilots and model aircraft enthusiasts have been required to register as UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) operators with the German Federal Aviation Authority. Upon registration, you will receive an e-ID, which must be affixed to your drone. We’ll show you if you need to register and how to do so. By the way: We handle the registration process for our recreational customers.

When do I need an e-ID?

Registration is required if:

  • Your drone weighs 250 g or more
  • Your drone is equipped with a camera or sensors capable of collecting personal data

Therefore, registration is not required if:

  • Your drone weighs less than 250 g
  • and does not have a camera or sensors capable of collecting personal data

What is the e-ID?

After registration, you will receive the European Registration Number for UAS Operators—the e-ID—which is valid throughout Europe and is linked to a specific individual.
The e-ID replaces the previous name and address plate. It no longer needs to be permanently affixed to the model aircraft or drone, as was required by law for the address plate. However, the e-ID must be affixed to every drone that is flown.

The rule is: one e-ID per person for all drones operated by the pilot.

As a UAS operator (drone pilot), whether for commercial or private use, please provide the following information:

Individuals:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Scan of a valid ID document
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Name of the insurer and insurance policy number

Registration fee: €20

Legal Entities:

  • Name
  • Scan of a valid document (e.g., extract from the commercial register, extract from the association register) proving the existence of this legal entity
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Name of the insurer and insurance policy number

Registration fee: €50
